Alcohol in mouthwash? Good or bad for you? I think my gums are receding because of it?

I have been using Listerine mouthwash lately, and noticed that my gums are receding. I honestly think the mouthwash is the culprit. Why do so many companies make mouthwash with alcohol in them? Are they necessary?
