The gums can heal from being brushed too hard but won't grow back. But you can keep it from getting worse by brushing gently. Start with the brush at where the gums and teeth meet and then brush in the direction away from the gums. So you go downwards with your upper teeth and upwards with your lower teeth. And with this technique, your teeth get even cleaner, because you get more brush bristles on your teeth than if you went in another direction.
