Why does the netflix on my TV not have imost shows and movies?

I feel bad because my parents spend like $8 a month (not a lot, but still) and i feel bad because there are only these old movies and shows no one knows about! and apparently on some peoples' netflix there are the most recent episodes of secret life and LOST and all those mainstream shows. we dont even have that on ours. we live in ontario canada. whats up with our netflix? is it only usa or something that has like everything?
